In the biggest athletics story of the day, World Athletics has announced the host cities for the 2029 and 2031 Athletics World Championships.

The biggest news is without a doubt the host of the 2029 Championships, as Kenya will have the honour of becoming the first ever African Nation to host the event. Nairobi has previously held youth championships at the world level, but now it has beat out the likes of London to welcome the best in the world in three years time.

Athletes will have to prepare in a special way in 2029, as Nairobi is located 1800 meters above sea level.

Two years later, the World Championships will return to a more usual ground in Germany's Munich. The last major championships in the city were organized as recently as 2022, when the European Athletics Championships were held in the Bavarian capital.

World Athletics president and British middle distance running legend Sebastian Coe told the world, that choosing the hosts was a daunting task.

- Nairobi and Munich will offer extremely different, but at the same time amazing opportunities for our sport. I'm really glad, that now we'll be able to plan such exciting, top-level Championships together, Coe said.

Next summer's Athletics World Championships are held in Beijing, China, who also played host to the event in 2015.
