If Arshad Nadeem secures a medal, it will be Pakistan's first medal in global Championships in the history of athletics.

Pakistan's success in sports has been focused on three main disciplines: field hockey, squash, and cricket.

The Pakistani men's field hockey team has won Olympic gold medals in 1960, 1968, and 1984, as well as World Cup gold medals in 1971, 1978, 1982, and 1994. They have won five lesser Olympic medals and two World Cup medals. Pakistan's most recent field hockey medals in global championships date back to 1994.

In cricket, Pakistan has won the men's World Cup championships in 1992 and 2009.
