The traditional Tour de France is considered one of the most intense sporting events, as cyclists go through a gruelling journey of almost 2000 miles in just a couple of weeks. In professional road cycling, the top speeds climb up to 80 miles an hour, with the average speed over the whole event sitting at around 25 mph.

Cycling - Events, tours and races 2026

Road cycling is by far the most popular cycling discipline, and its major events such as the Tour de France, Vuelta a Espana and Giro d'Italia are known to all people with even a fleeting interest in sports.

The trio has some rich history, with the first Tour de France being raced as early as 1903. The Giro d'Italia isn't far off with its inaugural edition being in 1909, while the first Tour of Spain was completed in 1935.

The UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) which oversees professional cycling also runs their own road cycling series called the UCI World Tour, which has 36 races for men and 29 for the women.

In addition to these, there is also the yearly event Road World Championships, where there are both time trials and road cycling events for men and women. The under 23 and under 18 World Championships are often held simultaneously.

Below you can find all of the notable cycling events, tours and races in the 2026 season.
