The Yellow Jersey made its first appearance as early as 1919. The founder of the race Henri Desgrange launched the jersey to make it easier for spectators to follow the race. The colour of the jersey came from the yellow pages of the L'Auto magazine, which was the main sponsor of the Tour de France.

This phenomenon spread across the cycling world, which is why in Italy their Tour's leader wears the Pink Jersey (maglia rosa), while in the Tour of Spain they use the Red Jersey (maillot rojo).

Maillot vert - The Green Jersey:

There are prizes up to 8th place in this category, and the jersey's holder will receive 300 euros for each stage he wears it.
