Wimbledon is without a doubt the most notable tennis tournament in the world while also being one of the four Grand Slam tournaments each year. It's the only Grand Slam to be played on grass courts in 2026. The iconic highlight of the tennis year takes place at England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, England.
The first Wimbledon tennis tournament took place in 1877, and it's continued every single year since then apart from the two world wars in 1915-1918 and 1940-1945 along with the covid gap year in 2020.

The official prize money amounts at Wimbledon 2026 have just been announced. Enjoy them in full below. Across the boards there have been significant increases compared to last year's event, with the winners of the singles pocketing 20% more. On average each prize category has seen an increase of 22%.

Wimbledon - History & Winners
The first Wimbledon tennis tournament was held in 1877. As you can probably guess, it's the oldest tennis tournament in the world and the only Grand Slam tournament to still be held on a grass surface. The other Grand Slams are the French Open (clay court),
US Open (hard court) and Australian Open (hard court), which are held on more modern surfaces.
The tournament is held each year at the All England Club Wimbledon in London. Along with it's other traditions spanning over a century, Wimbledon is also notorious for its strict white dress code for all players participating.

The most wins by a man at Wimbledon has been achieved by Switzerland's Roger Federer, who took the prestigious title 8 times. The women's record goes one further with 9 total singles wins, which has been achieved by Martina Navratilova of the United States.
