US Open Tennis - History and winners

The US Open tennis tournament first took place in 1881 under the US National Championships name. That name continued to be used until 1967, with the modern name US Open being adopted for 1968 and onwards.

The US Open is known in particular for it's atmosphere in the late evenings and nights. The tournament moved to it's current home in New York's Flushing Meadows in 1978.

The other tennis Grand Slam tournaments are The Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

US Open 2025

Last year's US Open was full of surprises in both the men's and women's category, with a number of high seeds like Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune and Frances Tiafoe all falling to opponents miles behind them in the rankings.

However, in the end it was a classic final for the season between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. You can watch the men's US Open 2025 final highlights via the video below.

In the women's tournament, the final showdown was played out between Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and home hero Amanda Anisimova. Unfortunately, just as in Wimbledon a couple of months earlier, the crowd's darling Anisimova who managed to beat her Wimbledon final opponent Iga Swiatek in the quarters here was forced to admit defeat, with the ruthless Sabalenka too strong.
