The Giro d'Italia, meaning of course the cycling event of touring Italy just like the one's in France and Spain, is one of the major yearly competitions in cycling. In 2026, the Giro d'Italia will take place for the 8th-31st of May for it's 109th edition.
The competitions history goes back over a century, with the first Giro d'Italia being held in 1909. The tour has gone ahead every single year since then, apart from when the two world wars were happening.
Giro d'Italia known as one of the Grand Tour -events, being of course the three tours around Europe. It's sister events are the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana.

Giro d'Italia 2026 - The Route
The route of the Giro d'Italia shifts a little from year to year, and has many times taken detours outside of Italy's borders. This is especially prevalent in more modern times.
The 2026 Giro d'Italia route begins a little surprisingly from Bulgaria, where the first three stages will take place. This year's competition will also take the athletes to Switzerland, bringing even more international colour to the event.
The route consists of 21 stages, 3 days of rest, mountain stages, hill stages, flat stages and one time trial. You can find the whole schedule and route along with all the stages below.

There will be a total prize pool of 1 606 160 euros for the Giro D'Italia, with the winner receiving 265 688€, second-place 133 412€ and third 68 801€.

Maglia Rosa - Pink jersey:
The general classification leader at the Giro d'Italia carries the
maglia rosaa, which is the name of the pink jersey. First debuing in 1931, the colour is inspired by the Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport.
Maglia Azzurra - Blue jersey:
The blue jersey, known as the
maglia azzurra is the mountain king's journey, given to the rider with the most points on the mountain stages. The colour symbolizes the blue of the sky and heavens along with the trophy for the winner of this jersey.
