The competition is divided into four main categories.
- Davis Cup Finals
- Qualifiers
- World Group I & II
- Regional Groups III, IV ja V
Davis Cup Finals
The Davis Cup Finals are the pinnacle of the tournament. Eight countries battle it out for the trophy in a six-day finals tournament. The Davis Cup finals are in November in a single city.
The 2026 Davis Cup Final 8 -tournament takes place in Bologna, Italy. Italy has earned itself an automatic spot in the finals as the reigning champion. The rest of the seven countries will have to battle their way in via the Qualifiers-matches in September.
Qualifiers
The Davis Cup's Qualifiers' stage sees 28 countries battle it out for a place in the finals. The qualifiers are played out in two separate stages:
- 1st Round: In February after the Australian Open
- 2nd Round: In September after the US Open
As you'd expect, the winners of the 1st Round go into the second round, while the winners of the 2nd round advance to the Davis Cup Finals. The losers of the first round go down to the World Group I Play-offs matches.
World Group I and II
World Group's I and II form the second highest tier of the Davis Cup. Both groups contain 26 countries, and the pairs who face each other are raffled based on the rankings.
Both levels see two rounds of matches. The first round is in February after the Australian Open, while the second round is played in September after the
US Open. The nations who manage two victories go up into the Qualifiers-level, while the losers of both matches fall down one step.
Regional groups III, IV and V
In the lower levels of the Davis Cup the teams are separated into regional groups. The regional tournaments are usually held in the summer, either before or after
Wimbledon in a single host country. The three best countries from each group move up.
Davis Cup - History
