The Gyulai István Memorial -competition in Budapest offered up world class results, as athletics' top stars went head-to-head.
The
Gyulai István Memorial in Budapest, Hungary offered up a top quality athletics evening, as the world's best went head-to-head in the final Continental Tour gold level competition. The brightest stars of the evening were world record holders
Ja'Kobe Tharp and
Armand Duplantis.
Tharp continued his impressive season by taking victory in the 110m hurdles with a meeting record of 12,85, which falls one tenth short of his world record time from June. There was stern competition to beat in the form of his team USA compatriots
Jamal Britt (13,01) and reigning world champion
Cordell Tinch (13,06).
The men's pole vault saw Swede Armand Duplantis return to winning ways with a leap of 607. The world record machine had three attempts at 632, but sadly fell short each time. Australia's
Kurtis Marschall came second with a jump of 600.
The women's 100m also saw an impressive time, as Olympic champion
Julien Alfred raced to victory with a time of 10,87. Saint Lucia's shining track star managed to defeat the likes of Jamaica's
Tina Clayton (10,97) and
Brianna Lyston (11,01).
In the women's 100 meter hurdles Olympic champion Masai Russell continued her winning streak by clocking in 12,33, which was enough for her 9th consecutive victory of the season.
The men's hammer throw was expected to be a highly contested affair. Olympic champion
Ethan Katzberg managed his season's best with a throw of 83,64, which was enough to take the win. Germany's
Merlin Hummel also managed an SB of 81,74 to finish second, while home crowd favourite
Bence Halasz got third with an SB of 81,65.
The rest of the week still provides us with plenty of athletics action, as there's the
London Diamond League to look forward to along with the
U18 European Athletics Championships in Italy starting on Thursday.
