The 2011 women's 1500m World Champion, Jenny Simpson of the United States collapsed at a pop-up mile event and was rushed to hospital.
The
Sir Walter Miler pop-up event in North Carolina was supposed to be a celebration of middle distance running, but things soon took a horrible turn. The 1500m women's World Champion from 2011,
Jenny Simpson (Jennifer-Barringer-Simpson) was in attendance, only to suddenly collapse.
It was confirmed by event organizer
Pat Price to LetsRun that Simpson had even lost her pulse for some time before being rushed to hospital. CPR was apparently performed at the scene, and her pulse has since been restored.
Simpson is one of the United States' most iconic middle distance runners, taking gold for her country at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. She also managed two WC silvers (2013 & 2017), while in the Olympics her medal tally was sadly limited to a solitary bronze at the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro.
We hope she continues to make as speedy a recovery as she is on track to get back up and running again. Enjoy her golden World Championship run from Daegu with some passionate Italian commentary to boot via the video below!
