The London Diamond League on Saturday saw a historic feat from Great Britain's Josh Kerr, as he raced the mile in 3:42,66 to achieve his dream and keep his word of a new world record.

Hichal El Guerrouj's 1999 world record of 3:43,13 stood the test of time for 27 years, but on Saturday Kerr has swiped him into the annals of history. Kerr was very public about wanting the record for himself, announcing his intent as early as March. The whole season was built for this particular race.

The Brit owes a lot of credit to American Brandon Kidder and Slovenian Zan Rudolf, who were the pacesetting duo until the 1200 meter mark. The first lap was sped through in 54,75, while the 800m interval came about in 1:50,63. Kerr crossed the 1500m line in 3:27,51, after which the final sprint was just a cherry on top.

The Edinburgh native celebrated the world championship gold from the 1500 meters in 2023 in Budapest, and he can also boast to have two Olympic medals on his mantelpiece. The Diamond League season now goes into a month-long break, as the season continues on the 21st of August with the Lausanne Diamond League.

Now the 1 mile world record returns to British hands after a 41-year break. Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett and Steve Cram ran a total of six different world records in the event between 1979 and 1985. Watch Kerr cross the finish line emphatically via the video below.
