The Lithuanian National Championships saw perhaps it's most easily predicted winner, as world record holder Mykolas Alekna dominated his way to victory in the men's discus. The greatest of all time is looking to be in terrifying form going into the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The just 23-year old Alekna reached a distance of 72,65 meters with his best heave of the discus. His series as a whole was a real warning sign to any competitors, as there were a total of 4 throws that reached over 70 meters.

Alekna's performances on the day make for pretty reading: 71,98 m, x, 72,65 m, 70,46 m, 69,87 m and 71,54 m.

- I'm in really good form. The weather was nice, and the atmosphere here great. I'm really happy with four throws over 70 meters and three over 71 meters, Alekna told LRT.

It's only been a month since Alekna returned to competing, as he suffered a ruptured pectoral muscle in the spring that demanded surgery. He started his season in the Diamond League with a throw of 71,06.

His result of 72,65m this time out is also the longest throw outside of Ramona in almost 20 years. It was in Ramona's extremely favourable conditions that Alekna broke the world record last year with his masterstroke of 75,56m.

The Athletics European Championships begin on Monday the 10th of August in Birmingham.
