Noah Lyles has made a new world record in the 150 meters at the Ostrava Golden Spike competition in the Czech Republic. Watch the amazing 150m run here.
Noah Lyles has earned himself yet another piece of history by breaking the 150m World Record at the
Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic. Although the 150 meters isn't a normal Olympic race distance, breaking any World Record is an incredible achievement in athletics.
The field in Ostrava was stacked, the 150m being dubbed as an official "World Record attempt" in the programme. Lyles' showmanship shone through even before the start, overshadowing the likes of Australia's
Gout Gout and
Sinesipho Dambile of South Africa.
It took Lyles a while to get going, but on the final stretch he firmly dispatched Dambile who also ran his national record with a time of 14,78, with Gout third going just under 15 seconds with 14,96.
The clocks stopped for the American winner at 14,67 to the delight of the Czech crowd, and a new World Record was born.
Although this was an official World Record, it's not the fastest 150m ever recorded by a man - or even Noah Lyles! On special tracks that have been run without a curve, Lyles clocked 14,41 in Atlanta in 2024, while the unofficial World Record is of course
Usain Bolt's. The Jamaican ran 14,35 in the Manchester City centre in 2009.
You can watch the full race via the video below.
In other notable events in Ostrava the 1000m World Record attempt sadly failed, with
Peter Bol falling a second short with his winning time. Meanwhile Dutch 400m hurldes star
Femke Broeders-Bol tried out the 800m in an outside environment for the first time since 2017.
Broeders-Bol has often anchored her country to medals on the international stage in the 4x400m relays, so no hurdles has clearly been no problem in the past. 1:57.13 is still an impressive time for a relative rookie, and she also finished the race in second behind
Audery Werro (1:54.45).
Sri Lanka's
Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the javelin, although his launch of 86,67m is far from his monster form in the Diamond League a week ago, where he threw over 92 meters.
The sprint season continues with the
Doha Diamond League and the 200m on Friday, but sadly Lyles will not be present. Only Dambile out of tonight's top 3 will be making the trip to the Middle East.
