The Paris Diamond League went ahead despite the 2026 heatwave, with Audrey Werro almost beating the 800m World Record and Noah Lyles tasting defeat.
The
Paris Diamond League came close to never happening in 2026, but luckily for
Audrey Werro, the meet went ahead in an adapted format. The Swiss star got her opportunity to get on the starting line with high hopes, with
Jarmila Kratochvílová's World Record firmly in her sights.
Her closest challenge in the French capital was
Femke Broeders-Bol, who's made a mesmeric rise to the top of the 800m after previously competing in the 400m hurdles. However, for Werro the only challenge was Broeders-Bol's fellow countrywoman
Myrte van der Schoot, who was the pacesetter.
The first 400m was raced in 55,64, but unfortunately the Swiss track star couldn't quite keep up with the same pace for the second lap. She finished as winner and new Diamond League record holder with a time of 1:53.80, falling 52 hundredths of a second behind the WR by the end.
Broeders-Bol came in second, taking her PB down to 1:55.60 in her first
Diamond League 800m. The women's 800m proved to be the highlight of the night, but there were plenty of other interesting events taking place as well.
The men's 100m in the heat promised to be a banger of a race, with Americans
Noah Lyles and
Trayvon Bromell going head to head. It took a photo finish to separate the duo, with Bromell taking the cake with 9,91, leaving Lyles scratching his head with 9,92.
Another World Record was attempted by usual suspect
Mondo Duplantis in the men's pole vault, but he had to settle for 6.13m. A great return to form after a shakier than usual start to the season, but 6,32m proved a step too far.
The Diamond League season continues at the start of July with a trip across the pond to Eugene on the menu. The
Eugene Diamond League couldn't have fallen on a better date, with the fullest American experience available to athletes on the 4th of July.
