It was a busy day at the U18 European Athletics Championships in Italy's Rieti, as there were six finals to be contested including the heptathlon. The biggest headlines where though naturally to come in the men's and women's 100 meters, where big things were expected of home hero
Kelly Doualla and British youngster
Divine Iheme.
First up was the Italian Doualla, who spurred on by the home crowd's roar shot to a new competition record of 11,14 and a relatively easy gold. Silver went to
Apostolia Antonatou of Greece with 11,46, while Team GB's
Celine Obinna-Alo took bronze with 11,50. Doualla's time was also enough for world lead in the U18 category.
Next up was the Brit, and he truly put in a performance worthy of his name, equalling his PB with 10,29 to take gold.
Francisco de Las Heras from Spain and Austria's
Marco Glinz both ran national records in the U18's but that wasn't enough to get the better of the Divine Iheme this time.
In other events the heptathlon provided the crowd with the most quality, as all three medal winners broke their national U18 record. Finland's
Alisa Launonen got the gold with a points total of 6154, while Germany's
Svea Funck (6065 got the silver and Dutch athlete
Fleur Favre (5822) took bronze.
