In the qualification heats (four heats total), 15 athletes start simultaneously on a 3 x 1.8 km course around Munich’s Olympic Lake. Each athlete shoots twice – first prone, then standing. Each missed shot results in a 60-meter penalty loop.
The top three from each heat plus the three fastest “lucky losers” advance to the 15-athlete final.
In the final, athletes ski five loops and shoot four times – two prone and two standing.
