Marco Fu handled the pressure on Day 5 of the Snooker World Championship qualifiers

Day 5 of the Snooker World Championship qualifiers saw Hong Kong's snooker pride Marco Fu battle his way through to the next round in dramatic fashion. Liam Davies (WAL) put up a great fight, but fell at the final hurdle following a 10-9 scoreline.

This defeat also had added meaning for Davies, as it sees him fall out of the professional tour. A trip to the Q School beckons, which is of course sad news for the Welshman.

However, he can at least take heart from his comeback performance on Friday, as Fu seemed to storm to a convincing victory at first with 5 consecutive frames giving the man from Hong Kong a 9-5 lead at the start of the evening session. The 19-year old Davies gathered himself and managed to bounce back with four of his own before the culminating decider at 9-9.

Both players had their chances in the dramatic decider, with a resolution to the situation only coming on the final red. Davies had an opportunity to make a hard pot and take the frame, but missed leaving the ball on the jaws and a sitter for Fu. The Tour's fastest cueist made no mistake and cleared the colored balls to continue his journey to the Crucible.

- This was an important match for both me and Liam. This is exactly what makes the World Championship so special - the last and most important tournament of the season. Everyone's giving everything to succeed. I can tell you it's never easy here, whether your a rookie or a 7-time World Champion. I'm really happy with this win, Fu commented after the game for WST.

The 48-year old Fu still needs two more qualifier victories to make the World Championship proper for the end of next week. He probably feels that it would be about time, as his last appearance at the Crucible came as far back as eight years ago.

Next up for Fu is 2024 World Championship finalist Jak Jones. Meanwhile in the final round he'll be facing one of either former World Champion Luca Brecel or Chang Bingyu.

Below you can watch the whole dramatic decider from the game between Fu and Davies. This newspiece continues below the video.

The other matches on Day 5 brought almost equal excitement. Snooker fans around the world got to witness another 10-9 decider where the final ball proved crucial, as Jordan Brown (NIR) defeated Englishman Ian Burns with the final black ball.

Hungary's Bulcsu Revesz held on to his spot on the Tour by defeating Louis Heathcote 10-8, while India's Ishpreet Singh Chadha continues his charge to become his country's first representitive at the Crucible with a 10-5 win over Chris Totten. Next up for Chadha is the experienced Ryan Day of Wales.

The Snooker World Championship qualifiers continue on Saturday, where we'll already be treated to some 3rd round fixtures. Notable players joining the feud for the Crucible include Luca Brecel, Jack Lisowski, Stuart Bingham and Hossein Vafaei.

Below are all the matches and scores from the 2nd round.
