The traditional Ostrava Golden Spike once again gathers a large number of the world’s top track and field athletes on Tuesday, June 24, in Ostrava, Eastern Czech Republic.
When it comes to big names, this gold-level event rivals even the
Diamond League competitions. Among the stars set to compete are
Armand Duplantis (pole vault),
Neeraj Chopra (javelin),
Grant Holloway (110 m hurdles), and
Femke Bol (400 m).
Just over a week ago, Armand Duplantis once again broke the world record on his home track in Stockholm, clearing 6.28 meters. He is now approaching the almost unbelievable height of 6.30 meters. Will the bar be set to a new world record height again in Ostrava?
Sprint hurdles superstar Grant Holloway of the USA has had a slow start to the season by his own high standards. Despite his many major championship titles, he only placed fifth at the Paris Diamond League, clocking 13.11 seconds. But better performances are surely on the way. In Ostrava, Holloway will face off against Dylan Beard, who finished second in Paris and came close to breaking the 13-second barrier with a time of 13.02.
The men’s javelin throw features a host of major championship winners. In addition to reigning world champion Chopra, who recently threw over 90 meters for the first time in his career, the lineup includes two-time world champion
Anderson Peters from Grenada and Olympic and European champion
Thomas Röhler from Germany.
Peters, whose personal best is an impressive 93.07 meters, has been seeking his best form early this season. His season-best of 85.64 came in Doha in May, but since then his performances have been surprisingly lackluster, recording distances of 83.24, 77.49, and 80.29 meters in three competitions. However, better results may soon be on the horizon.
Röhler, who threw 93.90 eight years ago and won Olympic gold in 2016 and the European title in 2018, has been struggling for years. In this season’s early competitions, the German has just barely crossed the 80-meter mark. Although he’s far from his peak form, compared to the previous two seasons, his early performances this year are even somewhat promising.
The men’s javelin competition in Ostrava starts at 7:00 PM local time. You can find the full start lists
