Judd Trump was on a tear in the Shanghai Masters quarter-finals, potting 515 points without an answer back at one point. Meanwhile, Wu Yize and Shaun Murphy battled to the final ball.
The
Shanghai Masters of snooker already served up some treats with the first two quarter-finals, as
Zhao Xintong whitewashed Neil Robertson 6-0 while
Kyren Wilson continued his title defence with a hard-fought 6-5 victory over Mark Williams.
It was therefore understandable if the second set of quarter-finals wouldn't quite live up to the same standards, but that was far from the case - the second set of matches went exactly the same!
First was the highly anticipated clash between
Judd Trump and
John Higgins, where brilliance was to be expected. That brilliance sadly only stayed on one side of the table though, as Trump banged balls frame after frame leaving Higgins with no chance.
The "Wizard of Whishaw" only got one chance to make a proper break all game, but his second-frame attempt at taking a frame was cut short at 37. Trump's unanswered streak of 515 points following that miss is certainly worthy of praise, especially since it hosted three different century breaks.
Like in the morning session, the other match turned out to be a real nailbiter, especially as the crowd was treated to a rematch of the
World Snooker Championship final from a few months back between
Shaun Murphy and reigning World Champion
Wu Yize, who was of course on home turf.
After Murphy clawed back a 3-1 lead to go level and into a 5-4 lead of his own, it looked like the Englishman was about to get some revenge with a red in the corner pocket to secure the frame and the match.
However, disaster struck, and now roared on by the home crowd Wu was in with a chance if he could clear the rest of the balls. It all came down to the final black, which the Champ shot in with aplomb to go on to the semi-finals and a date against the imperious Trump.
The first semi-final is tomorrow between Wu and Trump, with the sessions going on at 07:00 and 12:30. Zhao Xintong and reigning Shanghai Masters champion Kyren Wilson do battle on Saturday for the other slot in Sunday's final.
