World number 2 Kyren Wilson was eliminated in the second round of the Snooker World Championship by Mark Allen, who clutched up with a brilliant comeback in the final frame.
Kyren Wilson had been
Mark Allen's kryptonite before the 2nd round of the World Snooker Championship this year. "The Pistol" hadn't been able to defeat the 2024 World Champion for a whole 4 years, but the Crucible magic awakened something in the Northern Irishman from the first shot of the first session.
Allen took advantage of the momentum in similar vein to the first round, where his 6-frame streak was enough to take a comeback victory against
Zhang Anda. This time out the world number 12. was ready from the start, storming into a 5-0 lead without a blemish.
No comeback was needed for Allen, as it was Wilson who was desperately trying to close the gap bit by bit. Before the final session on Saturday morning the match was tightly contested with a 9-7 scoreline, and the British duo kept trading frames.
After the final break the score was 11-9, but Allen dominated frame 21 to take his tally up to match frame. The final frame was the pick of the bunch, as the Northern Irishman showed great grit to come alongside and past his opponent with the final pink.
Allen was up to 48-1 down in the final frame, but was handed two opportunities after Wilson missed a tough baulk brown and a guilt-edged red, which cannoned dramatically off the outsides of the pocket.
"The Pistol" continues his World Championship journey to the quarter-finals, where his opponent will be the winner between
Mark Williams and
Barry Hawkins. The World title has still eluded him thus far, and his dream is of course to finish the rare collection of Triple Crown trophies.
- I'm happy with the win, especially as it came against a player of Kyren's quality. He's world number 2 for a reason. I'm hoping to score points a bit better, but it's a good sign that I'm in the quarter-finals without really getting out of second gear, Allen told the public in WST's post-match interview.
World ranking second Wilson vented his disappointment in a positive manner: "All defeats here are a disappointment, but luckily I've already etched my name into the trophy, so that box has been ticked. Whenever you get eliminated here it's frustrating, but I gave it my all", the 2024 Crucible conqueror said.
