Comeback from 4-9 down and Chang Bingyu 147 headline Day 8 of Snooker WC qualifiers

The 3rd round of qualifiers at the World Snooker Championship 2026 concluded on Monday with plenty of excitement. One of the final matches was a proper thriller between Scotland's Anthony McGill and England's Martin O'Donnell.

The Scotsman found himself in big trouble throughout the match, ending the day session 2-7 down and falling just one frame away of elimination in the evening session at 4-9. However, McGill yet again showed his nature as a competitor, taking the final six frames of the session to come out on top 10-9.

This wasn't the first time McGill has completed a huge comeback at the World Championship. In 2019 he was the biggest story of Judgement Day, coming from 2-7 down against Robert Milkins to take victory 10-8 along with a trip to the Crucible.

The plucky Scot will face 2008 and 2012 finalist Ali Carter in this year's edition of Judgement Day. Carter's third round clash between him and Julien Leclercq finished 10-5 to the Englishman.

In Monday's evening session 2023 World Champion Luca Brecel defeated Chang Bingyu 10-8 and advanced to the final round. The crowd certainly got their money's worth with 18 frames of top quality snooker highlighted by a maximum break of 147 by Chang to take a 5-4 lead.

This was the Chinese cue master's second maximum break in major tournaments this season, which brought him an additional "Triple Crown 147" prize of £147 000 to complement and overshadow the £10 000 prize for a maximum in the qualifiers of the World Championship.

However, despite his maximal heroics, Brecel came out on top on Monday.

- I enjoyed this tremendously. It's really harrowing to play at such a high level for such a long match. We both played well, and virtually all the frames were decided in one visit to the table, Brecel commented for WST.

In the final round of qualifiers Brecel will lock horns with Jak Jones, who defeated the experienced Marco Fu 10-6.

Other notable names on the felt on Monday included Jack Lisowski, who took a 10-7 victory over Umut Dikme to continue to face China's He Guoqiang in the 4th round.
