1000m world record broken at Monaco Diamond League


The 1000m world record that had stood since 1999 was finally broken in the Monaco Diamond League, as Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi raced to history.

The Monaco Diamond League saw a new world record being born, as Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi raced to the 1000m finish line in just 2:11,83. The country of the world record holder did not change, as previously it was held by his fellow countryman Noah Ngeny, who ran 13 hundredths of a second slower in 1999.

Brit Jake Wightman came home to take silver and 5th on the all time list with a time of 2:12.77. The world record was made possible by excellent work by pacemsetters Patryk Sieradzki and Louey Ouerrat, who led the race to 400m and 800m respectively.

- This was the first time I've ran the 1000m, and breaking the world record makes me extremely happy. I want to thank the other athletes in this race who pushed me all the way, - Wanyonyi told the crowd after the race. Watch the highlights of the race via the video below.





In other events in Monaco the highlights included Julien Alfred's surge to 3rd on the all time 200m list with a time of 21.51. Agnes Ketich managed the same exact feat in the women's 3000m with a meeting record of 8:08.95.

The men's long jump also saw an impressive results, as Miltiadis Tentoglou from Greece leaped to 8.61m. Collen Kebinatshipi of Botswana achieved a national record in the 400 meters with a time of 43.44.

The season continues on Saturday the 18th of July with the London Diamond League.
