Amy Hunt of Great Britain sprinted her name into the history books, winning the women's 100m European Championship gold in Birmingham.
Amy Hunt of Great Britain flourished in the pressure of competing in front of her home crowd at the
Athletics European Championships 2026 in Birmingham.
The sprinter lined up as the favourite in the women's 100m, and a typically strong finish was enough to secure her status as the fastest woman in Europe. Her final time of 11,00 was just 0,02 ahead of Poland's
Ewa Swoboda, while Belgium's
Delphine Nkansa took a surprise bronze with a PB of 11,06.
Hailing from Newark just 70 miles away from the second city, it was clear succeeding here meant the world despite it being "only" a European title. Hunt even went a hundredth of a second faster in the semi-finals, but that doesn't matter in a major final - only finishing first does.
Her previous two major finals had ended with a silver at the 2024 Olympics and 2025 World Championships, so finally winning a gold medal will feel even sweeter. The crowd was clearly appetized for it, having seen Norway pip Team GB to the gold in the 4x400m mixed relay just minutes earlier.
Team GB's reigning European champion Dina Asher-Smith came in to finish fifth, and it never looked to be her day, requiring a lucky loser spot to even reach the final via the semi-finals. Hopefully she can find more form in the 200m on Thursday.
