Romell Glave and Jeremiah Azu stormed the men's 100m final at the European Championships in Birmingham to take home the gold and silver medals.
Team GB continued their sprinting prowess on Tuesday night, as
Amy Hunt's gold in the women's 100m got one-upped by Britain's male duo of
Romell Glave and
Jeremiah Azu.
Naturally, you can't really one-up a European champion, but in terms of British performance, you can't ask much more from Glave who is now the fastest man in Europe or Azu who won the silver. The Birmingham crowd roared in their approval after the stylish 1-2 finish in perhaps the highlight of the
Athletics European Championships so far.
Pre-final all the expectations were on the reigning European and Olympic champion, Italy's Lamont Marcell Jacobs. The Italian was dedicating this race to
Livio Berruti, the recently deceased first European 200m Olympic champion.
However his race was to be memorable for all the wrong reasons, suffering an injury and switching to jogging halfway through. It was Azu who was quickest from the blocks and looking strongest, even though his swaying and personable acceleration style does look like he could fall with any step.
Glave had the stronger finish though, powering through to the European title with a time of 10,09 to look back on. It's been a great year for the adopted Brit who moved from Jamaica in 2015, as he went under the magical 10-second mark for the first time this season with a PB of 9,97.
Azu looked to be caught by bronze medal winner
Owen Ansah (10,19) of Germany right at the death, but managed to barely hold on to the silver, finishing in 10,16. For Glave this was a first major championships gold, as his solitary medal was a bronze from the European Championships in Rome two years ago.
