Chase Jackson of the United States managed a new national record in the women's shot put at Berlin's ISTAF meet.
Chase Jackson made history at the ISTAF Berlin athletics meet, as she took the US record in the women's shot put to a completely new meter. The two-time outdoor and indoor world champion didn't fuss about, launching the steel ball to her own PB of 21,02 meters.
This was USA's new national record, which Jackson already held previously with a result of 20,95m. The 32-year old has been in strong form recently, as just over a week ago in Poland she managed another impressive result of 20,92.
Going further than 21 meters has been a relative novelty in the women's shot put in recent years. After the turn of the millennia only four athletes in addition to Jackson have managed it:
Larisa Peleshenko (RUS, 21,46m, 2000),
Valerie Adams (NZL, 21,24, 2011,
Nadzeya Ostapchuk (BLR, 21,09, 2005) and
Jessica Schilder (NED, 21,09, 2026).
Adams went over the magic barrier of 21m five times across her illustrious career. Peleshenko, Ostapchuk and Schilder like Jackson managed the feat once (so far). Sadly for Jackson, the shot put will not be a competed event at the inaugural
World Athletics Ultimate Championship.
However, the world record in the women's shot put is still far beyond any of them, thanks to Natalya Lisovskaya of the Soviet Union, who in 1987 shocked the world by launching the shot put to a distance of 22,63m.
