100m- & 400m -hurdles World Records Broken at Zurich Diamond League

The Zurich Diamond League was without a doubt an important event to begin with, as the final spots for the Brussels Diamond League finals where up for grabs. However, it was two already qualified athletes, Brazil's Alison dos Santos and USA's Masai Russell who stole the show.

First up was the men's 400m hurdles, where dos Santos was in cruise control all race against his main competitor, world record holder Karsten Warholm. He caught up to the Norwegian who still had a curve advantage as early as the back straight, and the win was never in doubt.

However, the time is what mattered more, as the Brazilian roared when he saw the clock - 45,80 - a new world record. The previous mark of Warholm was bested by 14 hundredths of a second.

The previous man to hold the record before the current reigning duo was USA's Kevin Young, who held the record for almost 29 years with his time of 46,78. Warholm was the first to break it with 46,70, but it was his next WR of 45,94 that really sent shockwaves across the athletics world. Now dos Santos holds the crown, going almost a second quicker that Young all those years ago.

The crowd had barely managed to gather their bearings when it was already time for another highly contested event - the women's 100m hurdles. The current world record holder (12,12), Nigeria's Tobi Amusan was to be challenged by Olympic Champion Masai Russell, who had gone 12,14 (2nd all time) at the Xiamen Diamond League earlier this season.

It was to be the American's day as it has been her season, as she led from start to finish. Amusan got a little closer by the end, but Russell was already across the finish line, with the clocks stopped at a new world record time of 12,09.

Amusan had held the record since 2022, but now Russell joins Kendra Harrison as only the second American to hold the world record in the women's 100m hurdles. You can watch the full race via the video below, with the race starting around 2:50 in the video.
