The FIS has announced that the World Ski Championships will now be held every single year, apart from when there are an Olympic Games.
The FIS (International Ski and Snowboard Federation) has made a massive announcement concerning the Ski World Championships. The two-day meeting in Thun, Switzerland was a productive one, but the big takeaway is that from 2032 onwards, the World Championships will now be held every year bar those in which there are an Olympics.
The 2027 Skiing World Championships will be held in Sweden's Falun, while in 2029 the circus moves to Lahti, Finland. There have also been talks that there could already be an "extra" World Championships in 2028, but there was no confirmation as of yet.
In addition to cross-country skiing, other FIS events such as Nordic combined, ski jumping, alpine skiing and freestyle sports such as snowboarding would also follow the same pattern.
The other big news from the FIS meeting was the situation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, who will be allowed to compete under a neutral flag provided that they sign a declaration of neutrality based on a set of principles, which the FIS will establish.
The FIS will also monitor the athletes' compliance with these principles, and there will be consequences if they are breached. The participation of the athletes is limited to individual events, and no country symbols like flags, uniforms or anthems are allowed.
