Nordic Combined will no longer be a part of the Olympics in 2030, as the Alpes games are to have complete gender parity.
Nordic combined fans and athletes have just received devastating news, as
the IOC (International Olympic Committee) has announced that the discipline will not be retained for the 2030 Olympics.
The IOC outlined their reasoning for the decision on Tuesday in Lausanne to be due to gender parity, global appeal and not a competitive enough women's scene. The sport is only followed and done heavily in Norway, Austria, Germany, Finland and Japan, which has left tv viewership too low.
The Olympics in France will see instead a couple of new sports, with
ski mountaineering (skimo) taking an especially large role after it's successful debut at Milano-Cortina 2026. The games will be the first Olympics with full gender parity with an even 50/50 split among male and female athletes.
Freeride or backcountry skiing will see its debut in Alpes on both skis and snowboards along with
synchronised skating (synchro9). The
snowboard parallel giant slalom will also be retained.
Quite where this massive decision from the IOC will leave Nordic combined can't be said as of yet, but National Associations will surely gather to discuss the future of the sport. Disciplines have previously been dropped from the Olympics but returned, which is what all NC fans will be hoping for this time out as well.
