North Korea's athletics team started their campaign in China impressively, as 24-year-old Jo Kumryong clocked a new national record of 10.28 in the men's 100 meters heats.

Before Friday, Jo Kumryong had a personal best of 10.76, set in Indonesia in 2018.

The previous North Korean record in the event was 10.60, achieved by Yu-Jon Rim in 1991. So, the national record improved by a significant 0.32 seconds.

North Korea's only athletics medal in global championships is Jong Song-Ok's gold in the women's marathon at the 1999 World Championships in Seville.
