The winner of the Nagano Olympics biathlon sprint race has died at just 53 years old.
Russian biathlon Olympic Champion
Galina Kukleva has died at just 53-years old, the Russian Biathlon Union has announced. The RBU told the world that Kukleva sadly passed away on the 14th of July 2026.
Galina kukleva was born on the 21st of November of 1972 in Ishimbay. She rose to worldwide fame at the end of the 1990's, especially at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, where she won the gold medal in the 7,5 kilometer sprint race.
That Olympic victory was particularly dramatic and memorable, as she took the gold by only 0,7 seconds compared to the silver medalist,
Uschi Disl of Germany.
In addition to the Olympic gold, Kukleva achieved three
Biathlon World Championship gold medals from the relays with her country, along with a personal silver medal from the mass start in 2000.
Kukleva finished her career in 2003, but according to the release from the RBU, she continued working in the biathlon world as a coach. She was a very respected figure in the Russian biathlon scene for the rest of her life.
