Weightlifting Series and Competitions in the Olympics


Weightlifting is one of the few original sports of the Olympics that has retained its place in the Olympic program to this day.

Over the decades, the competitions in weightlifting have changed significantly. At the first Olympics in 1896, there were competitions without weight classes and there were three forms of competition: dumbbells, two- and one-handed weightlifting. From 1920 onwards, weight classes were introduced.

In the 1924 Paris Olympics, competitions were held in pressing, snatching and clean-jerk. The press was last included at the 1972 Munich Games. After this, the winner has been decided by the combined result of the clean-jerk and the snatch.

The first weightlifting competition day in Tokyo 2021 is Saturday, July 24, when the women’s 49 kg weight class competitions kick off. The last Olympic medals will be awarded on Wednesday, August 4, when it is the turn of the men’s +109 kg weight class.
